Shortly after Pope Paul VI canonized Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton on September 14, 1975, Monsignor John J. O’Connor, then Chief of Chaplains and later Archbishop of New York, took the initiative to proclaim Mother Seton “Patroness of the Sea Services.” She is an intercessor for Catholic men and women in the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine and United States Public Health Service.
Mother Seton was named Patroness of the Sea Services because of her deep personal connection to the sea through her two sons, William and Richard. William served in the U.S. Navy while Richard served as a civilian with the Navy. Her extensive letters while they were at sea reflect her deep maternal concern and prayerful intercession.
This lovely desk plaque is a beautiful and inspiring reminder of her powerful intercession for those at sea.
